About This Project

DARKNESS AND LIGHT is a block of short outdoor films which explore dark and light themes, both literally and metaphorically. These are tales of struggle, hope, beauty, and pain, which will take the viewer through a wide range of emotions.

CRUX – 34 minutes – by Zac Hoffman, Casey Dubois – from BC
Short synopsis: Harvey is a recovering addict who uses rock climbing to work through his ongoing struggle with mental health. As trauma, depression, heartbreak and declining mental health were woven into Harvey’s internal fabric, so was rock climbing. Crux tells the story of Harvey’s recovery as he learns to love himself amidst the mountains of his life.

THE LIGHT OF LUBEC – 3.2 minutes – by Roger McCord – from Maine
Short synopsis: A pictorial essay on a landmark known as “America’s first light” – the West Quoddy Head lighthouse in Lubec, Maine.

BLAZING TRAIL – 9 minutes – by SouthBound Collective – from Queensland
Short synopsis: Caine Warburton is an Australian firefighter and accomplished, sponsored trail runner. This story follows Caine through The Scenic Rim, as the worlds of a sponsored athlete and professional firefighter collide.

IF I TELL THEM – 12.43 minutes – by Oliver Sutro – from CO                                                
Short synopsis: James Sampsel, a plein air painter and fly-fishing guide, comes to terms with his past and a bi-polar diagnosis that hangs over his future.

MAINE: BLUE HOUR ON THE MIDCOAST – 2.85 minutes – by Bob Krist – from Boothbay Harbor, Maine
Short synopsis: A look at the beauty of midcoast Maine in those special moments right before sunrise, and right after sunset.

THE LAST LIGHTKEEPERS – 1 hour – by Rob Apse – from NH
Short synopsis: This lighthouse film odyssey across New England, explores the regions final act to save these American sentinels that once defined a nation, now deemed excess, where individuals fight to preserve their structures and recount their folklore before their lights go dim.
