ATTACK & RELEASE – 15 minutes – by Tom Attwater – from Montana – Short synopsis: After Ranga Perera’s family moved to the U.S. from Sri Lanka, he tragically lost his father to an unexpected heart attack. While coping with the loss of his father, he found himself in Montana where he was drawn to the magic of fly fishing and the solace of the river. Throughout his journey, he struggles to rediscover his childlike wonder and finds comfort in his time spent on the water. After a confrontation with his own mortality, Ranga learns the importance of mindfulness and living life with an open heart.

SKIN SWIMMER – 6.9 minutes – by Hannah Walsh – from British Columbia – Short synopsis: Waking up on a cold, winter Vancouver morning, most people choose to stay inside sipping their steaming coffee. This is not the case for Roberta Cenedese, as her mornings look drastically different. Instead, she wakes up and heads for the ocean to dive into the frigid waters of the Pacific Northwest, only wearing a bathing suit. Through triumph and failure, Roberta trains for one of the most challenging feats in action sports; an ice mile in three degree water. Join resident seals on this gripping and adventurous journey, where Roberta’s intimate connection with the Salish Sea is front and center.

ABOVE THE LAW – 14 minutes – by Bryony Dunne – from Ireland – Short synopsis: Above the Law links the routes of migratory birds with the journeys of people who traverse the same bodies of land and water. Unfolding atop a pigeon coop in Cairo, across bird watching towers on a Greek island as well as the border in Northern Ireland, these parallel journeys depict the laws of nature vis-à-vis the rule of man, reminding us that geopolitical are irrelevant to some species. The film features a literal bird’s-eye view as eagles, carry cameras on their backs, becoming instruments of surveillance, capturing nature, both human and nonhuman.

SAP TIME – 4.2 minutes – by Roger Scott McCord – from Maine – Short synopsis: Two brothers, who own a Maine dairy farm, also make maple syrup to help make ends meet.

EVERY STREET SLC – 10.65 minutes – by Corey Lester, Parker Lester – from Utah – Short synopsis: After coming to the realization that he doesn’t know well the city in which he lives, Bryant Heath decides to run every street in Salt Lake City. As he ventures, he sees the hidden beauty that composes the neighborhoods and the cultural magnitude of SLC.

INTERMISSION

A PAINTING FROM THE EARTH – 15.8 minutes – by Jeshua Soucy – from Maine – Short synopsis: The story of a young artist who transforms natural material from the earth into a painting of an old log cabin.

A WATERSHED MOMENT – 41.25 minutes – by Tate Yoder – from Maine – Short synopsis: A Watershed Moment tells the story of an all-hands effort involving fishermen, three coastal Maine communities, non-profit organizations, and state and federal management agencies to restore fish passage throughout the entire Bagaduce River Watershed in Maine. These grassroots efforts to bring back alewife, a keystone species that has allowed fishing communities to thrive have been remarkably successful. An unlikely group of partners, the story of this partnership is rooted in collaboration and can act as a beacon of hope for other communities and watersheds involved in fish passage restoration and community-driven science and stewardship. A Watershed Moment is a story about people, fish, and the water that connects them.
